Bismillah.

Qibla refers to the direction that Muslims face during prayer (Salah), and this direction is the Kaaba.
Muslims face the Qibla to perform their prayers no matter where they are in the world.
However, from time to time, we may find ourselves in environments where we do not know the direction of the Qibla.
For example, when visiting a place for the first time, in a new city, a village, a forest, a beach, or similar locations, we might struggle to determine the Qibla.
For this reason, we have listed the methods for determining the Qibla direction for you.

1. Asking Someone

Especially when going to a new city or human settlement, the simplest thing we can do to learn the Qibla direction is to ask someone nearby. If the person is Muslim and lives in that area, they will happily show us the Qibla. Even if the person is not Muslim, Islam can at least be introduced while discussing the Qibla and prayer. Furthermore, even if the person is not Muslim, one can ask for a nearby mosque/masjid.

2. Masjid / Mosque

Another method that can be used in human settlements is mosques and masjids. Mosques and masjids are generally built facing the Qibla. Even if they were not built in the direction of the Qibla, one can enter them to learn the Qibla direction. Additionally, the crescent (alem) on mosque minarets usually points toward the Qibla.

3. Qibla Applications

If you have access to any electronic device, there are applications available even on web browsers that show the Qibla direction. These applications use your location and your device's sensors to show you the direction of the Qibla.

4. Map Applications

The direction of the Qibla can be determined from your current location using map applications on electronic devices. Although it requires a bit more effort compared to dedicated Qibla apps, it is one of the alternative solutions that can be used to find the Qibla.

5. Qibla Hour (Kıble Saati)

During the Qibla hour, the Sun is directly in the direction of the Kaaba, and shadows fall along the Qibla line. By learning the Qibla hour for your location and facing the Sun at that exact time, you will be facing the Qibla.

So, if we do not have access to an electronic device, and there are no people, masjids, or settlements nearby, is it still possible to find the Qibla?
Let us take a look at how the Qibla can be determined in such situations:
First of all, it should be noted that in such cases, to determine the Qibla, one must know at least approximately their current location and its position relative to the Kaaba so that the Qibla angle can be known and direction can be determined accordingly. For example, relative to Istanbul/Turkey, the Kaaba lies further to the South and East. To be precise, it falls at approximately 151 degrees Southeast. This corresponds roughly to a point between South and Southeast. However, it should not be forgotten that there can be a difference between Geographic Poles and Magnetic Poles. For example, for the year 2026, the Magnetic Declination for Istanbul is approximately 6 degrees. This means that the Qibla direction with a compass falls at approximately 145 degrees Southeast; however, in practical application, such small deviations will insha'Allah not invalidate the prayer.

1. Compass

Whether physical or digital, using a compass is one of the most fundamental and easiest methods for determining direction. Knowing how to use a compass is important not only for finding the Qibla but also for any emergency situation. However, it should be kept in mind that both digital and physical compasses are magnetic devices that operate using Earth's magnetic poles and are affected by surrounding magnetic fields. This means that the compass will be affected by nearby magnets, electronic devices, refrigerators, computers, phones, and other devices with magnetic fields. Therefore, to determine the direction correctly with a compass, care should be taken to ensure there are no interfering magnetic fields nearby.

2. The Sun

The Sun has been a popular method for determining direction and time for thousands of years. Main directions such as North and South as well as cardinal and intermediate directions can be determined using the directions where the Sun rises and sets, and the Qibla can be found based on this. Furthermore, direction can be determined not only by looking at the Sun directly, but also by using the shadows created by the Sun. Additionally, one of the simplest ways to verify whether a compass is showing the correct direction is to compare the East/West directions indicated by the compass with the Sun.

3. The North Star (Polaris)

As mentioned in the verse, stars are used for navigation. The most well-known among them is the North Star. Unlike a compass, the North Star does not give directions according to magnetic poles. Instead, it shows you True North. In this respect, it is extremely useful for orientation and consequently for determining the Qibla.

Additionally, depending on your location, orientation can also be determined by looking at signs such as moss on trees or the entrances of anthills.

“And He has cast into the earth firm mountains lest it should shake with you, and rivers and roads that you may guide yourselves. And landmarks, and by the stars they guide themselves.”
Surah An-Nahl 15-16


However, it should not be forgotten that Islam is a religion of ease. You may not be able to hit the exact Qibla angle, or you may have no means at all to determine the Qibla. However, this situation does not prevent you from praying and cannot be an excuse. In cases where the Qibla cannot be determined, one can perform the prayer by turning toward the direction believed to be the Qibla, by Allah's permission.
